It’s already clear, as sad as it might be, that Jamie Fraser ( Sam Heughan ) is about to go through some significant changes in Season 3 of Outlander .
Heughan’s character has long been the source of eye candy for many fans, though that might change as the series jumps twenty years into the future.
According to People , Heughan is more than prepared to play an older version of his character. In fact, the actor playfully told Vulture that he hopes Jamie gets fat as he grows older.
“I’m thinking about getting really fat,” Heughan shared in the interview. “I’m thinking eating a lot and not working out would be really good.”
Thankfully, Heughan was only joking, “Do we really want to see that?” he asked before nodding his head in disagreement.
The Season 2 finale of Outlander featured an aged Claire (Caitriona Balfe), who didn’t appear drastically different twenty years older. Fans have yet to see how the series will age Jamie, though they can only hope it will be a subtle process.
For Heughan, the actor is more than excited for the time jump next season, whatever it looks like.
“It’s going to be a completely different show,” Heughan explained. “Next year’s stuff is probably the most interesting, in a way. We’ve been setting it up, setting the stage, introducing these characters, and now it goes into new, different worlds.”
The upcoming season of Outlander is based on the third book in Diana Gabaldon’s series, titled Voyager . Although the details about the adaptation are vague at this point, Heughan did hint that some exotic locations are in the works.
“Going to Jamaica would be nice!” Sam Heughan exclaimed. “Pina Coladas!”
In the books, Claire and Jamie venture outside of Scotland in Voyager and spend a good chunk of their time on board a number of different ships.
While Jamie’s new appearance is going to be interesting to watch, he added that the storyline is less about physical changes than it is about his character’s life once Claire is out of the picture. After all, Jamie spends twenty years on his own, which includes another stint in a prison.
Meanwhile, Scotland Now is reporting that Lord John Grey will be included in Season 3 of Outlander . In fact, executive producer Ronald D. Moore just confirmed Grey’s involvement in the series.
Fans were already introduced to the younger version of Grey last season. Grey was the boy who attempted to kill Jamie before the Battle of Culloden.
In the books, Grey is actually a very important character whom Gabaldon wrote a number of spin-off novels about. He reconnects with Jamie at a prison in Scotland where the two become good friends.
However, in the television adaption, Moore admitted that none of the spin-off material will be included in Outlander , at least not yet.
“Not so much. John Grey is in the third book, so we’re kind of taking our cues from what is actually in the third book at this point,” Moore shared. “We’re not averse to it. We just aren’t really bringing in the other novels at this point.”
Unfortunately, it still isn’t known who will be cast to play Grey in the new season and whether or not Moore and his team are actively casting for any roles yet. Until more information is released, fans can rest assured that Grey will be a prominent figure on the show for years to come.
Production for Season 3 is expected to begin as early as late August or the beginning of September.
An official premiere date for the new season of Outlander has not been revealed.
