Although reports suggest the project is dead in the water, Ron Howard says he still plans to make Stephen King’s The Dark Tower into a movie.
The Cinderella Man director previously teamed up with writer Akiva Goldsman to bring the project to life. The pair originally envisioned the adaptation as three movies and a television series. However, the duo hit a snag when Universal Pictures and Warner Bros. turned them down.
Despite these setbacks, Ron Howard insists that he’s still moving forward with The Dark Tower . However, it might not get here as quickly as the filmmaker had hoped.
“The Dark Tower’ is something that we’re still working on. We’ve all taken a vow of silence about the progress, because I don’t think I realized how much media interest there was and how much excitement there was,” the director recently told the folks at Empire magazine.
Since the stories themselves are a little complex, Ron Howard said adapting the tale for the big screen is definitely a complicated process. Even the man who originally conceived the tale thinks Howard has his work cut out for him.
“Even Stephen King acknowledges it’s a tricky adaptation, but to be honest, from a financing side, it’s not a straightforward, sunny superhero story — it’s dark, it’s horror,” he said.
The award-winning filmmaker continued, “That edge is what appeals to me, the complexities of those characters is what appeals to all of us. So my answer is: it got delayed, it’s never gone away. We’re working on it, and Stephen is very patient with us.”
Right now it’s unknown when the filmmaker’s storied adaptation will arrive in theaters. It’s also unclear which studio will bankroll and release the flick.
