Following the news that the DC Wonder Woman comic books would divulge the bisexual orientation of Diana Prince, many fans have been wondering how this will affect the live-action film adaptations. Will Gal Gadot’s character be gay, bisexual, or straight in the stand alone film and subsequent Justice League films? Ms. Gadot is opening up about the topic, revealing an answer that may be disappointing for the LGBTQ community and supporters, but Gal adds that there is a rainbow of hope for future Wonder Woman films.
Wonder Woman Star Gal Gadot Keeps Hope Alive
Yahoo Movies was eager to get Gal’s take on the sexuality of Wonder Woman in the upcoming film, so, while she joined the rest of the Keeping Up with the Joneses cast, Ms. Gadot was asked about Diana Prince’s preference. Gadot says her bisexuality doesn’t come up in the film, which makes sense, since the Wonder Woman script was written in advance of the DC comic book revelation by Greg Rucka.
In providing hope that Wonder Woman and her sexual preference would be detailed more fully in a future DC Entertainment film, Gal describes the character in a way that makes her sound very openly pansexual.
“I think Wonder Woman is all about heart, and she cares for people without paying too much attention to their gender,” says Ms. Gadot. “So that’s an option, but we never experience that in [ Wonder Woman ].”
While Wonder Woman does give the female superhero a love interest who is both mortal and male, Gal says she’s hopeful that Diana, her character’s alter ego, will eventually find love with a female.
“Maybe in the future, who knows?”
Isla Fisher stars opposite Gal Gadot in the comedy Keeping Up with the Joneses and, as such, the two women share a scene in which they kiss. It must have been a memorable moment for Isla, because she jumped into the conversation, offering to be that future Wonder Woman love interest.
“In the sequel, there will be me,” Fisher said, inventing her own superhero on the spot. “A ginger woman … Ginger Woman. And I come onto the island. And we fall in love.”
Gal Gadot And Patty Jenkins Reinvent Wonder Woman For The Silver Screen
In speaking with Variety , Gal Gadot reveals that creating Wonder Woman for film was a labor of love for director Patty Jenkins and herself. While Wonder Woman is certainly a warrior fighting the forces of evil, Gadot says her primary motivation is love and wanting people to be able to live in peace. Gal says the Wonder Woman story is more about love and Diana Prince’s great heart than it is a story of war and strife.
“It was her heart that we cared about, not her being this warrior,” explains Ms. Gadot. “When you tell a story from the heart, all of us can relate, because all of us want to live in a safe, quiet, and peaceful world.”
Moving on to discuss more practical concerns in filming Wonder Woman , Gal reveals that her superhero outfit is much more complex than it may appear on screen. She says it takes up to 20 minutes just to slip into the uniform, but she adds that, after having spent a year getting in and out of the Wonder Woman ensemble for Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, Wonder Woman , and the first of the two Justice League films, it has gotten easier. Gadot says she has always loved the look of the outfit, but it took some time to feel comfortable in it. Now, it fits like a glove.
Ms. Gadot also shared her favorite Wonder Woman accessory and, considering her earlier statements about telling the Wonder Woman story from a place of love and peace, her answer makes sense.
“I like the lasso of truth. There is something so beautiful about the fact that people have to tell the truth when they have the lasso around them,” says Gal Gadot. “And it’s not too violent.”
Wonder Woman is set to hit theaters on June 2, 2017.
