Authorities say police in Indiana arrested 72 people on 99 charges over the weekend at the University of Notre Dame.
According to Indiana State Excise Police spokesman Travis Thickstun, 41 people were arrested on 53 charges Saturday during tailgating before Notre Dame’s game against Michigan. Thickstun added that police arrested 31 people on 46 charges, including 18 adults caught furnishing alcohol to minors, the day before.
Wane.com reports most of the 99 charges consisted of illegal consumption or possession of alcohol, possession of a false ID, public intoxication, disorderly conduct, and false informing.
There was also one drug-related charge, various traffic violations, and two charges for resisting law enforcement. In one case, a male juvenile ran from officers as they were speaking with a group of people in the tailgating lots. He was caught and found to have a BAC of .07%. He was cited and was released to his mother after she was cited for furnishing alcohol to a minor.
The arrests at Notre Dame bring the total of arrests to more than 430 at Indiana schools included in the excise program, which are Notre Dame, Indiana University, Indiana State, Purdue University, Butler and Ball State.
BSUDaily News notes that the crackdowns began as a result of a program called the Intensified College Enforcement — a statewide program geared toward curbing underage and illegal drinking at college campuses that was introduced in February 2012.
