The Walking Dead as a movie on the big screen?

It could happen soon, according to Chad Coleman who plays fan-favorite Tyreese on the hit AMC zombie drama.

Coleman, along with Sonequa Martin-Green (Sasha) and Emily Kinney (Beth), have been promoted to series regulars , and, as such, the actor may have access to inside information.

Under new showrunner Scott Gimple, filming for season 4 of The Walking Dead has started in the Atlanta area and the first episode is scheduled to premiere on television in October.

Chad Coleman played Dennis “Cutty” Wise on HBO’s The Wire . Another Wire alum, Lawrence Gilliard, Jr. , has reportedly been added to The Walking Dead cast.

In case you tuned in late, The Walking Dead , based on a series of graphic novels by Robert Kirkman, follows a small group of survivors who are led by Georgia Sheriff Rick Grimes (British actor Andrew Lincoln) in a quest to try to find a safe haven far away from the menacing zombie-cannibal “walkers,” a.k.a. “biters.”

The Walking Dead is said to be most popular basic cable show in America and is part of AMC’s powerhouse Sunday night franchise which also includes Mad Men and Breaking Bad .

With regard to a possible Walking Dead movie, Chad Coleman made these comments: “As far as a Walking Dead movie is concerned, I think it should happen. I think it would be amazing… I think it would catch on like wildfire. I think everybody would love that just as well as they talk about The Wire movie … I really think a Walking Dead movie is going to be in the works not too far down the road , and I think it’s gonna just take ’em by storm.”

If ratings for the TV show are any indication, a potential movie could be a box office bonanza. The Walking Dead Season 3 finale on March 31 broke a viewership record for AMC . An all-time high of 12.4 million television viewers watch the season-ending episode, with 8.1 million from the all-important 18-49 demographic. The season 2 finale last March drew 9 million viewers, and this year’s mid-season finale captured 10.2 million viewers. No other TV show has a higher number of watchers in the 18-49 cohort (which is prized by advertisers).
