The tour manager for the British band, Fisherman’s Friends, has died in a freak accident as the group prepared for a gig in Surrey.
Paul McMullen was killed, and one of the band’s singers, Trevor Grills, suffered serious leg injuries at the G Live venue in Guilford. A heavy steel door fell on both McMullen and Grills on Saturday afternoon only hours before the group were set to play.
Paramedics arrived on the scene soon after but were unable to revive McMullen. Grills is currently in St. George’s Hospital in Tooting, London, and is still in a serious condition.
John Cleave, a member of the band, released a statement today, which said, “The Fisherman’s Friends are very touched and moved by all the concern and support shown for our friends Trevor and Paul. We’d like to express ours and Port Isaac’s thanks to everyone for that. It is part and parcel of our Cornish communities to pull together one and all in such times and that is what we are doing.”
The statement also added, “We are all deeply shocked and upset by the tragic loss of Paul McMullen, our dear friend and promotor, our thoughts are with his family at this very sad time. Paul was a great man and very much part of the Fisherman’s Friends family.”
Fisherman’s Friends formed in the early 90s, and consist of three fishermen and six other musicians from the Cornish village of Port Isaac. They were recently offered a $1.6million recording deal with Island Records.
