Will Smith has revealed that his 14-year-old son, Jaden , wants to move into a house of his own for his birthday.
The teenage singer and actor is looking to become emancipated and wants to live in a home on his own, away from his parents.
However, rather than being annoyed at his son’s request, Will has taken it in his stride and believes that it is a result of his supportive upbringing.
Smith revealed,”He says, ‘Dad, I want to be emancipated,’ I know if we do this, he can be an emancipated minor, because he really wants to have his own place’.”
Smith went on to explain that he and his wife, Jada Pinkett Smith, believe that Jaden and his younger sister Willow, who is aged 12, should make their own mistakes and learn from them rather than being overly disciplined.
Will told The Sun , “We generally don’t believe in punishment. From the time Jaden was five or six we would sit him down, and all he has to do is be able to explain why what he did was the right thing for his life.”
Smith added that he decided to take this path because of his own upbringing. “I was brought up with, ‘You don’t even talk to your parents about what your opinion is, you are not allowed to have an opinion. When you pay some bills, you can have an opinion’.” He then added, “My parents let me talk now.”
Unlike most 15-year-olds, Jaden is probably well equipped to already own his personal abode. He has already starred in The Karate Kid and will be next seen in After Earth , alongside his father.
After Earth is set a thousand years after humanity has left a dying earth. When Will’s general Cypher Raige returns to the planet with his son Kitai Raige, played by Jaden, their spacecraft crashes and he must rely on his offspring to save them both.
Do you think Jaden should live alone? What do you think of Will Smith’s parenting?
