Roger Ebert Hospitalized With Hip Fracture

Roger Ebert has been hospitalized with a hip fracture, but will not need surgery to correct it. The celebrated Chicago film critic’s wife first made the announcement on Twitter on Thursday.

Ebert is no stranger to health issues and the hospital, as the film critic has suffered from health problems for the past several years. The critic’s wife, Chaz, announced on Twitter, “Roger in hospital with hip fracture (tricky disco dance moves) but he is doing well, asking for computer, will probably tweet.”

Sure enough, The Hollywood Reporter notes that Ebert tweeted about his most recent trip to the hospital, assuring his followers, “Yes, fracture. But no surgery needed. Details follow. :)”

Ebert was hospitalized in the past when he suffered from cancer in his thyroid and salivary glands. He lost his lower jaw and ability to speak following several surgeries to remove the cancer. The film critic, true to his love of cinema, later posted a link to his review of Citadel .

Chaz Ebert spoke with The Associated Press later on Thursday, saying that her husband is doing much better and that “doctors are making assessments” on when he will be able to leave the hospital.

While Ebert can no longer speak, he still communicates using pen and paper, text-to-speech computer software, or social media (for his fans) like Twitter. He published a memoir in 2011 called Life Itself , which is being adapted into a film that unites Martin Scorsese, Steven Zaillian, and Steve James.

We at The Inquisitr are sorry to hear that Roger Ebert was hospitalized and hope for a speedy recovery.
