Bill Gates thinks that Bing is a better search engine than Google. Seriously.
The billionaire philanthropist did a Reddit AMA (Ask Me Anything) today and talked about Microsoft, the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, Steve Jobs, and his new Microsoft Surface Tablet. Gates also made a few comments on Bing.
Gates was asked if he “seriously” used Bing or if that’s just what people at Microsoft have to say.
Gates responded:
“Seriously Bing is the better product at this point. Try the challenge. I am biased but the work to make Bing better has been amazing.”
Bing may be the better search engine, according to Gates, but it doesn’t come close to Google in terms of popularity. According to BGR, close to 70% of all searches in December 2012 were powered by Google. Bing keeps growing but it currently only makes up for 25% of all searches.
In addition to Bing, Gates also talked about is new Surface Pro and his massive “Perceptive Pixel” display.
Gates said:
“I just got my Surface Pro a week ago and it is very nice … I am using a Perceptive Pixel display right now – huge Windows 8 touch whiteboard. These will come down in price over time and be pervasive..”
And when Gates says huge he means it.
You can read the Bill Gates AMA here or check out some of the highlights below.
- Bill Gates on Bing: It’s the better product.
- On the future of technology: Robots, pervasive screens, speech interaction will all change the way we look at “computers”. Once seeing, hearing, and reading (including handwriting) work very well you will interact in new ways..
- On relaxing: I love playing tennis. I am an avid bridge player (a card game if you have not heard of it – it was more popular in the past!). I like to tour interesting things with my kids like power plants, garbage dumps, the Large Hadron Collider, Antarctica, missile Silos (Arizona),… I read a lot and watch courses (online or the Learning Company)..
- On cheap pleasures: Kids. Cheap cheeseburgers. Open Course Ware courses…
