A Pennsylvania woman is suing McDonald’s for forcing her to use a prepaid debit card to access to her money.
Natalie Gunshannon worked at the fast food franchise for less than a month and was outraged when she learned the company required employees to accept payment on a J.P. Morgan Chase payroll card.
The 27-year-old said that the card came with many fees including $1.50 for an ATM withdrawal, $5 for over-the-counter cash withdrawals, and $1 to check the balance.
“I’m looking for the pay I am owed and for them to understand there has to be an option,” she said.
Gunshannon made just $7.44 an hour at McDonald’s and could not afford to pay any extra fees to access her money. “I need to receive all the money I earn,” she said. “I can’t afford to lose even a few dollars per paycheck. I just think people should be paid fairly and not have to pay fees to get their wages.”
Albert and Carol Mueller, the couple who own the McDonald’s , declined to comment directly on the lawsuit but insisted that they care about their employees.
“We value our employees and everything they do for our organization,” the couple said in a statement. “We are committed to providing them the best possible work environment so they can deliver the fast, reliable service that our customers expect.”
Gunshannon isn’t the only person who has filed a lawsuit against McDonald’s. In May, a New York woman sued the franchise after she bit into a piece of glass while eating a chicken sandwich. Gospel singer Jacqueline Simpson claimed that the incident has ruined her voice.
“Now when I sing, I have a hoarse, rattly voice. I still sing alto, but I can’t sing soprano like I used to,” she said.
