San Diego’s pervy mayor Bob Filner still isn’t stepping down, but he will seek counseling amid several sexual harassment allegations leveled against him.
Filner will undergo intensive therapy for two weeks in light of these allegations after admitting “words are not enough” in a recent, long-awaited statement.
“It is simply not acceptable for me to try and explain away my conduct as the product of standards of a different generation,” Filner said.
“Most of all I apologize to the women I have offended,” he continued.
On August 5, Filner will enter a behavioral counseling clinic in order to curb his behavior. He said that the short rehab stint will be followed by regular, ongoing counseling. “I must become a better person,” Filner said.
He’ll return to his mayoral duties in full on August 19.
Some Filner’s former employees have alleged that the mayor inappropriately touched them or attempted to force himself on them on several occasions. One of his former senior staff members said that he frequently asked her to kiss him and propositioned her for sex. Additionally, he made several lewd comments, like asking her if she thought she’d perform her job better without underwear.
Thursday, San Diego County Democrats voted to ask Filner to step down. Democratic National Committee Chair Debbie Wasserman-Schultz has also called on him to leave office.
One of his employees has also filed a lawsuit against Filner. She is represented by celebrity attorney Gloria Allred .
