Matthew McConaughey’s career is on fire. From the flamboyant Magic Mike to the dramatic Oscar bait Dallas Buyers Club , McConaughey is nothing short of impressive when it comes to having a complete overhaul of his career.
Next up is an HBO series called True Detective , that will see McConaughey opposite Woody Harrelson. The eight part series, directed by Jane Eyre’s Cary Fukunaga, tells the story of two detectives who cross paths while pursuing a 17-year manhunt.
McConaughey and Harrelson respectively play a non-critical-thinking man, and another who is more of a philosopher. The HBO series, based on Nic Pizzolatto’s novel focuses on the 17-year manhunt of a Louisiana serial killer, with testimony from McConaughey and Harrelson’s characters in the 2012 case that was reopened.
In the trailer for True Detective , McConaughey explains the story of the manhunt, which by then had taken a serious toll on his looks. He’s gaunt, but nothing in comparison to his extreme look for the Dallas Buyers Club .
In addition to Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson is Kevin Dunn, Alexandra Daddario, Michelle Monaghan, Michael Potts, and Elizabeth Reaser. Some if not all of the cast is familiar with this type of genre, and with Fukunaga’s focus, it seems like the series could be a hit for HBO.
True Detective hits HBO in January of 2014.
If you want your McConaughey fix before then, you won’t have to wait for long. McConaughey will be seen in Dallas Buyers Club as HIV-positive Ron Woodruff on November 1, and after that McConaughey will be opposite Leonardo DiCaprio in the dramedy crime film Scorsese cooked up called The Wolf of Wall Street . In the latter film McConaughey will be playing Mark Hanna, a mentor for DiCaprio’s Jordan Belfort.
Looks like we’ll be seeing many different shades of Matthew McConaughey, which will surely serve him well heading into Awards season.
