New ‘Super Smash Bros.’ Won’t Have Story Mode, Cutscenes

Super Smash Bros . creator Masahiro Sakurai has revealed that the upcoming game will not have a story mode or CG cutscenes.

Why? Because someone has already leaked the scenes online.

“Unfortunately, the movie scenes we worked hard to create were uploaded onto the Internet,” Sakurai said . “You can only truly wow a player the first time he sees [a cutscene]. I felt if players saw the cutscenes outside of the game, they would no longer serve as rewards for playing the game, so I’ve decided against having them.”

Instead, Super Smash Bros. will feature new character introduction video sequences for the Wii Fit Trainer , Mega Man , and the Villager. Sakurai also said that, while there also won’t be a story mode, the 3DS version of the game would include a feature that would act “as a separate mode from the standard versus play.” The Wii U version will feature more home console game-themed stages, versus the 3DS’s portable game-themed stages, which eliminates the possibility of cross-platform play.

The game will also feature some character customization, which will alter character performance in an as-of-yet unspecified manner. But, don’t expect any of those characters to be fighting characters.

“The biggest feature we look at in Smash Bros . is, ‘What does this character bring to Smash Bros . that other characters don’t,” Sakurai told Games TM . “If you look at… someone from a fighting game already, and people like fighting with this character, from my point of view, it’s like ‘this guy does what this guy already does. He fills the role that this character already has.’”

Last month, Sakurai told Polygon , “There will be a single player [campaign], but it won’t be like the [Subspace Emissary] mode in Brawl .”

Are you disappointed that the new Super Smash Bros. won’t feature cutscenes or a story mode?
