The 1980s was the decade of excess: loud colors, over-the-top fashion, greed, and it also provided some of the best movies that are currently available on Netflix. Movies in the ’80s made a shift from the “new Hollywood” period of the ’60s and ’70s, to the “high concept” era. Movies that focused on simple and highly marketable straightforward plots were the trend. This was the decade that created the moniker of “Hollywood blockbusters,” and Netflix is hosting a great deal of them.

E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial (1982)

Steven Spielberg’s E.T. is one of the most iconic movies ever created, and it is the highest-grossing film of the 1980s. It was the highest-grossing movie of all-time until it was ousted by another Spielberg classic, Jurassic Park . The critic consensus on Rotten Tomatoes describes why this is one of the best movies on Netflix .

“Playing as both an exciting sci-fi adventure and a remarkable portrait of childhood, Steven Spielberg’s touching tale of a homesick alien remains a piece of movie magic for young and old.”
