Chelsea Handler has put her money where her mouth is and donated a cool $100,000 to the American Red Cross. Handler pledged the cash as the Hurricane Sandy relief effort begins along the East Coast of the United States.

Handler’s donation was made during an interview on her show, Chelsea Lately , with actor, singer, and comedian John C. Reilly.

When Reilly challenged the studio audience to text REDCROSS to 90999 to donate $10, Handler stepped in with a whopping $100,000 pledge to the humanitarian organization. The money will aid relief efforts all over the East Coast, providing much-needed food and shelter to those who lost their homes in the superstorm.

“Some insane weather went through,” observed Reilly during the interview, “but now people are gonna be dealing with it for a long time.”

Handler herself has a connection to many of those caught in Hurricane Sandy. As a New Jersey native, it’s likely Handler knows people who have suffered over the past few days. Sandy first arrived on shore in New Jersey, and the damage suffered by the state is easily amongst the worst of the past few days.
