Legendary Pictures’ Godzilla remake is currently scheduled to destroy North American theaters in 2014, Cinema Blend reports. The project will be helmed by director Gareth Edwards, the man responsible for crafting the 2010 alien invasion flick Monsters . Since that film dealt specifically with humanity’s reaction to large, destructive creatures, Edwards seems to be the right man for the job.
During his appearance at the San Diego Comic Con last July, Edwards explained that he was taking the project very seriously. Instead of injecting the movie with high camp and lots of self-referential humor, the filmmaker intends to treat the scenario realistically. If Godzilla were to suddenly wreak havoc on the world, how would people react? Edwards covered similar ground with Monsters , which could ultimately work quite well when paired with everyone’s favorite giant lizard.
According to The Film Stage , Godzilla is slated to arrive in theaters on May 16, 2014. The film — which was written by David Callaham , David S. Goyer , and Max Borensetein — will be also be available in 3D should you wish to see the creature feature in the third dimension.
If everything goes according to plan, 2014 is going to be a very busy summer. Not only do we get yet another American adaptation of Godzilla , moviegoers will also be treated to The Amazing Spider-Man 2 , Robopocalypse , How to Train Your Dragon 2 , Transformers 4 , The Hobbit: There and Back Again , X-Men: Days of Future Past , Dawn of the Planet of the Apes , and Guardians of the Galaxy , just to name a few.
The last time someone in Hollywood decided to toss a bunch of money at the Godzilla franchise, the world ended up with director Roland Emmerich’s 1998 box office misfire . Although the trailers suggested something truly epic, the end result was more in tune with Steven Spielberg’s Jurassic Park than Japan’s iconic monster.
Are you excited about Godzilla’s return to the big screen? Would you pay to see the movie in theaters?
