Spike Lee Launches Kickstarter Campaign For Next Project

Director Spike Lee recently launched a Kickstarter campaign for his new motion picture.

The Malcolm X director is taking a cue from Zach Braff and Rob Thomas for his next cinematic venture. Instead of hitting up a Hollywood studio for cash, the filmmaker is asking his fans to help him raise a cool $1.25 million for the as-of-yet-untitled project.

In a message to his fans on Kickstarter , Spike Lee said that it’s becoming increasingly difficult for directors to get their projects off the ground. Studios seem determined to crank out sequels, comic book movies, and 3D effects films on a regular basis. Lee apparently doesn’t want anything to do with it.

“I have a different vision of what cinema can be, a different vision of what some under-served audiences might want to see. That is why I am here on Kickstarter, to raise the funds for The New Spike Lee Joint, to get this bad boy financed,” the filmmaker explained.

Lee continued, “Do you wish to see human beings dealing with each other on a human level? How many more explosions with ear-splitting sound effects can you take? C’mon people, please get behind this joint.”

The director describes his next project as a funny, sexy, and gory tale about people who are addicted blood. However, Spike Lee insists he isn’t making Blacula.

Lee promises that every dime he raises with his Kickstarter campaign is going directly into the production. The filmmaker won’t “take a fee” for spearheading the project.

Considering the amount of backlash Zach Braff received for launching his own Kickstarter campaign earlier this year, it will be interesting to see how folks react to the news. Lots of people apparently have a problem with Hollywood types asking fans to finance their movies.

While he’s patiently waiting for the money to roll in, Spike Lee is gearing up for the release of his upcoming thriller Oldboy . The film, a remake of the South Korean classic, stars Josh Brolin, Elizabeth Olsen, and Elysium villain Sharlto Copley.

What do you think about Spike Lee starting a Kickstarter campaign for his next feature?
