The first trailer for Roland Emmerich’s White House Down has arrived online.

The Independence Day director is heading into territory recently covered by Millennium Films’ Olympus Has Fallen . Antoine Fuqua’s White House-oriented thriller just hit theaters last weekend. The film stars Gerard Butler and Morgan Freeman.

Judging from the new trailer, Emmerich’s White House Down seems to tread similar ground. However, moviegoers get Channing Tatum and Jamie Foxx instead of Butler and Freeman. While Olympus Has Fallen seemed to treat the situation somewhat realistically, White House Down looks a bit more over-the-top.

Columbia Pictures describes the film as follows:

“Capitol Policeman John Cale (Channing Tatum) has just been denied his dream job with the Secret Service of protecting President James Sawyer (Jamie Foxx). Not wanting to let down his little girl with the news, he takes her on a tour of the White House, when the complex is overtaken by a heavily armed paramilitary group. Now, with the nation’s government falling into chaos and time running out, it’s up to Cale to save the president, his daughter, and the country.”

In addition to Tatum and Foxx, Emmerich’s latest action flick stars Maggie Gyllenhaal, Jason Clarke, Richard Jenkins, and James Woods.

Since he loves to blow things up, Roland Emmerich recently revealed that he intends to move forward with sequels to his 1996 science fiction flick Independence Day . The director revealed that he wants to release the follow-up as two separate films.

The filmmaker said of the project:

“The humans knew that one day the aliens would come back. And they know that the only way you can really travel in space is through wormholes. So for the aliens, it could take two or three weeks, but for us that’s 20 or 25 years.”

The trailer for the latest White House action flick has been embedded below.

Although the film is similar to Olympus Has Fallen , Columbia Pictures is hoping audiences will still show up for White House Down when it hits theaters on June 28.
