One Direction has dropped the audio for “Best Song Ever,” which fans can hear by hitting that button right up top.
I feel morally obligated to warn you that if you’re not already a fan, you’re not going to be magically transformed into one by this piece of bubble gum pop music. It is, by no means, what a snotty person such as myself considers in the running for “Best Song Ever.”
But apparently some people think it’s good enough to be worth fighting over who had the idea first. MTV thought it was inspired by the Who’s “Baba O’Riley.” (And that isn’t the best song ever, either. It isn’t even the best Who song, sniffed this writer.)
So the fine folks at MTV asked One Direction about it. Producer Julian Bunetta said:
“At a certain point we recognized it had the same type of intro where there’s a synth and a piano, but we really tried to make sure that there was no intellectual property stolen or anything like that…
“[W]e put it in the context [of the chorus] of [how] it’s a little bit of poking fun at pop music, but also embracing it at the same time.”
That’s just a tiny piece of what Bunetta had to say. If you want a long extended meditation on the creation of One Direction’s “Best Song Ever,” you’ll have to read the rest at MTV.
“Best Song Ever” was leaked online on Wednesday , which The Daily Mail reported upset the members of One Direction. Maybe it did, and maybe it didn’t. Seems to me that a lot of songs get leaked these days. Either the music industry is leakier than the NSA and the Costa Concordia put together — or some of these leaks are just good old-fashioned publicity stunts.
