Taylor Swift unveiled a British accent in her opening performance at the Grammy Awards in what is being seen as a dig at her English ex-boyfriend, Harry Styles.
Swift broke out the British accent during an Alice in Wonderland -like performance of her Grammy nominated song “We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together,” the Toronto Globe and Mail noted.
As soon as Swift did the British accent, fans of the band One Direction took to Twitter to express their displeasure. Swift and One Direction performer Harry Styles split early this year after having a fight while on vacation to the British Virgin Islands.
The Associated Press took note of the row, asking “Did Taylor Swift just launch World War III?”
Swift’s British accent came after she expressed a bit of nerves for performing on such a big stage. Though Taylor is no stranger to making big performances, she seemed unusually put off at this performance, telling E!’s Ryan Seacrest : “I hope I don’t nerve out and freak out. Opening up the Grammys is something I’ve never done before, something I never dreamed I’d get to do.”
Taylor Swift’s British accent slam at Harry Styles comes a just a bit of a surprise to fans. Despite gaining a reputation for using her breakups as inspiration for her songs, Swift seemed to be a bit more at ease this time. She recently talked about looking forward to spending Valentine’s Day with friends and working in the studio instead of going on a romantic date.
The statement made it seem as if the singer was over her relationship with Harry Styles, but Swift’s British accent says differently.
