‘Married At First Sight’ Season 4 Spoilers: Nick Refuses To ‘Encourage Physical Intimacy’ With Sonia, MAFS Couple Heads For Split?

Married at First Sight Season 4’s Nick Pendergrast and Sonia Granados may not be the most affectionate couple in MAFS history, but the two are determined to make their marriage work. In the sneak peek clip for Episode 8, “To Have and to Hold,” the experts were seen helping Nick and Sonia do some exercises to help them communicate better as a couple.

Since the beginning of Married at First Sight Season 4, Sonia believes that sex plays a very important role in a relationship. But before they take their relationship to the next level, the couple acknowledged that they first need to build an emotional connection.

“We have not consummated our marriage. I have thought about it a lot. Even if I’m like crazy attracted to him, and him to me, I’m going to try my darndest not to have sex too quick. I really want to establish that emotional connection,” Sonia told the cameras after the wedding night.

Although Nick also feels attracted towards his new wife, even rating their chemistry as an eight, he’s not the type to throw compliments one after the other, which made Sonia a little bit insecure. In the latest Married at First Sight Season 4 episode, Nick and Sonia did an exercise, as suggested by the experts, to help their communication issues. They took turns saying things they appreciate about each other. Sonia told Nick she appreciates his sense of humor, while he appreciates her “ability to overlook his lack of communication.”

Sonia took this opportunity to ask Nick why he is so closed, and he explained that they have only known each other for a short amount of time.

“I think you’re an awesome person, but am I in love with you? No,” Nick told Sonia.

Nick’s response clearly surprised and hurt Sonia, which led to her walking away. The 33-year-old social worker wondered why he felt the need to say those words to her. Nick, on the other hand, felt like he did nothing wrong, as he was just trying to open up more.

“Her telling me I’m not really open about my feelings and as soon as I begin a serious conversation, she closes down or walked away,” he told the cameras.

In the next episode of Married at First Sight Season 4, the experts give Nick and Sonia another assignment, which would involve touching. While Sonia ended up saying once again that sex is important in a marriage, it seems like Nick is not on the same page.

“I am not gonna do anything to encourage physical intimacy,” he said in the promo.

Fans of Married at First Sight Season 4 had mixed reactions, with Nick not wanting to consummate his marriage with Sonia. Some wondered if the 32-year-old vacation rental manager was gay or if he was just not that into Sonia. Some felt bad for Sonia, who got matched with someone with such a dry personality like Nick. Others, however, defended Nick and said that perhaps he was just being cautious and did not want to get his feelings hurt.

In an interview with the Knot , Sonia shared admitted that marrying an introvert like Nick had its good and bad sides.

“The good points of being with an introvert is that they seem to be more trustworthy people. I think it may be because it takes so long for him to open up that I would think he wouldn’t open up to anyone too easily with his feelings. The not-so-good point is that I love talking to friends, going out with them, and I’m super spontaneous, but Nick is not. He likes things to be planned,” she shared.

Looking back, Sonia had nothing but nice words to say about Nick. While we have yet to find out if the Married at First Sight Season 4 couple decided to stay married after the six-week social experiment is over, Sonia said Nick is a “great human being” with a “genuine heart.”

“Something really nice about Nick is that when you least expect it, he does the sweetest things that really take you by surprise,” she added.
