English singer Adele brought tears to the eyes of James Bond himself with her title track for the film Skyfall .
Adele is so effective a crooner that we can hardly fault Daniel Craig for breaking into tears over her “Skyfall” theme. Craig admitted in a recent interview with Yahoo Movies that he could hardly contain herself when he heard the track for the first time.
“I cried,” he said. “From the opening bars I knew immediately, then the voice kicked in and it was exactly what I’d wanted from the beginning. It just got better and better because it fitted the movie. In fact the more of the movie we made, the more it fitted it.”
Of course, Skyfall is said to be a rather emotional entry in the Bond franchise, perhaps even more so than Craig’s first outing, C asino Royale . Craig may also be reeling from his own blood, sweat, and tears poured into the franchise, which he has said on several occasions , affects his personal life in an at-times negative way.
Still, part of Adele’s success with the Skyfall theme song probably comes from the fact that she was involved early on, and was even sent a copy of the script to help inspire her, according to MTV UK .
“She came in very early before we started shooting and her main concern was, ‘I write songs about myself, how can I make a ‘Bond’ song?’ recalled director Sam Mendes. “My answer was, ‘Just write a personal song!’ Carly Simon’s ‘Nobody Does it Better’ was a love song.”
Upon debut, Adele’s “Skyfall” nearly nabbed the top spot on the UK charts, falling short to Swedish House Mafia’s “Don’t You Worry Child.” No James Bond song has ever hit the top of the chart, so the fact that Adele even got close is a testament to her star power, anticipation for Skyfall , and the quality of the title track.
