The Thor 2 trailer debuted online Tuesday. Thor: The Dark World is part of the Thor and Loki franchise of Marvel comics-based movies that continue a story left off after 2012’s The Avengers , directed by Joss Whedon. The new film will arrive in US theaters on November 8.
Chris Hemsworth returns in the starring role of Thor, crown prince of Asgard and hammer-wielding superhero. He was inspired by the Norse god of the same name.
Game of Thrones alum Alan Taylor directs. In Thor 2 , the dramatically coiffed superhero is reunited with love interest Jane Foster, played by Natalie Portman . They return to Thor’s home world only to discover a new enemy.
According to the studio, Thor: The Dark World continues the epic tradition of the previous films, as Thor “battles to save Earth and all the Nine Realms from a shadowy enemy that predates the universe itself… Faced with an enemy that even Odin and Asgard cannot withstand, Thor must embark on his most perilous and personal journey yet, one that will reunite him with Jane Foster and force him to sacrifice everything to save us all.”
Thor 2 is part of Marvel’s “Phase two” series of follow-up films that also includes The Avengers 2 and Iron Man 3 , among several others.
In addition to Portman and Hemsworth, most of the original Thor cast will also return for the sequel, including Tom Hiddleston, Anthony Hopkins, Ray Stevenson, Jaimie Alexander, Stellan Skarsgard, Idris Elba, and Kat Dennings.
Christopher Eccleston will play arch-villain Malekith the Accursed, the ruler of the dark elves of Svartalfheim. Iron is Malekith’s kryptonite, and he may experience a special-effects heavy allergic reaction to the metal in the course of the story.
Yes, Loki is back. Like the original Norse god who inspired him, he is apt to appear as an agent of chaos rather than an unalloyed asset for Asgard.
