Google Nexus 7 Hacked, Now Shoots 720P Video [Side-By-Side Demonstration]

The Google Nexus 7 tablet ships with 480p video recording capabilities but now thanks to a group of modders the device can record up to 720p video.

Posted on XDA Developers the hack was accomplished by changing the devices firmware settings.

Apparently the hack was simple and only required changing several lines of code inside the Nexus 7’s media profiles. Once initiated the new coding tells the device how to record in 720p.

The XDA post explains how to achieve 702p video recording with both tethered and untethered methods.

The process involves modifying the /system/etc/media_profiles.xml file and the addition of a Camera.apk file.

Some users who have attempted the hack claim it has disabled their devices audio profiles which may be a result of the direct setup they use.

The Google Nexus 7 tablet was announced without a rear-facing camera which confused some buyers who thought it would be a smaller version answer to Apple’s iPad tablets. Google also failed to include a camera app which left the device only with the ability to use video chats.

Since its release third-party app developers have worked hard to develop new camera apps, while other have adapted Google’s already created apps for smartphones and tablets in order to enable camera functions.

In the meantime third-party developers continue to hack apart the Google Nexus 7, along the way turning it into a more robust and user friendly tablet.

Here is the side-by-side comparison videos that showcase the Google Nexus 7 with 420p and the Google Nexus 7 with 720p video recording capabilities:
