Rising rap star Chief Keef has been detained by police after a video surfaced of him shooting a semi-automatic rifle was released.
The 17-year old Keef, whose real name is Keith Cozart, now faces jail time for what Judge Anthony Walker says is “…a clear record of a disregard for the court’s authority.”
According to the Chicago Sun Times , the semi-automatic shooting was filmed as promotional material for the young star. He should have read the rules of his probation before participating however.
Last January, Chief Keef was sentenced to 18 months probation for after being convicted of aggregated unlawful use of a weapon for pointing a gun at Chicago Police officers. Part of Keef’s probation was the stipulation that he could not have contact with guns.
Keef’s attorney, Dennis Berkson, insists his client did not violate the terms of his probation:
“Was it stupid? Yes. Did it violate the court order? No.”
Berkson believes his client should be cleared because Keef never left the range with the gun and he was under the strict supervision of a trainer. He also says his client was simply following orders from his record company, Interscope Records.
Assistant Cook County State’s Attorney Jullian Brevard rebutted Berkson’s statement by reminding the Judge that Interscope Records does not hold more power than the law.
Later, the Judge told Berkson that it didn’t matter where Chief Keef fired the gun. He says that, even if Keef handled the gun inside a private residence, he would have been found in violation of his probation.
This is not the first time Keef has made headlines. He recently threatened Lupe Fiasco via Twitter and started a feud between the two artists.
What do you think: Is Chief Keef in violation of his parole?
