A coffee-powered car recently set a world speed record.
Developed by 42-year-old eco-engineer Martin Bacon, the so-called Coffee Car is fueled by waste that is left behind during coffee production. According to NineMSN , the unusual automobile was recognized by the Guinness Book of World Records after it managed to maintain a speed of 65 mph.
Bacon said of the achievement:
“We’re thrilled to have taken the speed record for the fastest car of this kind. We got up to 69mph one way and about 63mph the other, so it did okay. This is an old model. We put a new 1600 engine in but even with petrol, the top speed would have been about 85 mph.”
The Northern Echo reports the car operates on fuel create by the waste that is generated during coffee production. After heating the leftovers, the gases are then cooled down and filtered. Once the process is complete, it can be used as fuel to power the engine.
The coffee-powered car set the world record at the Woodford Airfield in Stockport in Greater Manchester. Bacon, who said any automobile can be fueled by gasification, isn’t one to rest one his laurels. Instead of basking in the glow of this accomplishment, he has his sights set on another world record .
While he prepares to embark on a 1,600 to 2,000 mile coffee-powered adventure, the car’s inventor intends to use the vehicle for educational purposes. Bacon and his unusual vehicle are scheduled to appear at 31 co-op supermarkets in an effort to teach people about alternative fuel options.
