Sharmeka Moffitt, the woman who claimed three men set her on fire and scrawled “KKK” on her car, burned herself in a bizarre turnaround announcement by police Tuesday evening.
The Inquisitr previously reported that Moffitt was found with burns on more than half of her body and was allegedly set on fire by three men, who then wrote a racial slur and the hate group’s initials on her car.
Moffitt told police that she didn’t recognize her attackers but that she believed they were wearing white hoodies. The woman claimed that she was alone at the time but that she was able to douse herself with a water tap.
An officer arrived at the scene less than a minute later, and Sharmeka told the officers what happened. Now, however, The Sacramento Bee reports that the woman made up the story.
Police on Tuesday stated that they believe Sharmeka Moffitt intentionally set herself on fire before calling police at 8 pm on Sunday to report the fake attack.
WWL-TV notes that Winnsboro Police Chief Lester Thomas announced that Moffitt admitted she set herself on fire as well as scrawling the racial slurs on her car. DNA on a lighter at the scene also matched her.
The burned woman’s family released a statement about the attack, saying:
“Our family is devastated to learn the circumstances surrounding our daughter’s injuries. While this is not the resolution we had expected, it is a resolution, and we appreciate the thorough investigation by the local and state police as well as federal agencies.”
Moffitt is currently in critical condition at LSU Health Sciences Center in Shreveport, Louisiana. Police have not yet released a motive for why Sharmeka Moffitt set herself on fire.
