[UPDATE: At least two people were killed today during the plane crash in San Francisco. Other passengers who were injured are being transported to San Francisco General Hospital for treatment. The original story continues below.]
A Boeing 777 operated by Asiana Airlines crashed today at San Francisco International Airport . Details about the incident are still unclear but witnesses say that the plane lost its tail and then “cartwheeled” across the runway.
There were approximately 300 passengers on board the plane at the time of the crash. Authorities have not released a statement yet about how many people were injured in the crash.
Laura Brown, spokeswoman for the FAA in Washington: “All we know is that a foreign airline, Asiana Airlines Flight 214 arriving from Seoul, South Korea, crashed while landing … That’s all I’ve got right now.”
The flight has been identified as Asiana Airlines Flight 214 and was coming in from South Korea.
A witness told KTVU that the plane’s tail was ripped off after it hit the runway. The plane then slid across the runway, “rolled over,” and then came to a stop on its belly.
Another witness told ABC that the tail of the plane hit the runway first and then the plane “cartwheeled” before coming to a stop.
Photos of the plane crash show the Boeing 777 resting in a field at San Francisco International Airport. The tail of the plane is completely detached from the plane and the top of the plane is torn open and charred.
Passengers reportedly escaped the plane via inflatable slides. David Eun, who was on board the plane at the time of the crash, said that he believed that everyone got out of the plane OK.
