The Following has picked up an early renewal by Fox Entertainment. The Kevin Bacon led mid-season premiere was able to draw in 10.4 million viewers and the numbers have been positive ever since.
The show centers around Bacon’s character who was a hot shot FBI investigator who saw his career cut short after being stabbed in the heart by a brilliant serial killer. That serial killer Joe Carroll (played by James Purefoy) opens the series by staging an escape which ends up being geared towards killing the only victim who escaped his first murder spree.
After committing that murder Carroll willingly returns to prison and Bacon’s character (Ryan Hardy) believes that the danger has past. It is only then that the audience finds out that Carroll has set up a bit of a cult of serial killers who all do his bidding.
Once the extent of the group is discovered The Following has its stage fully set. The rest of the series is set up to pit Hardy against a jailed and waiting on death row Carroll in a real-life and bloody game of chess.
The Deadline reports that Fox has picked up the show for another 15 episode run, the same order they placed for this season. Because of that it seems likely that the next run of the show will also begin mid-season.
Fox apparently doesn’t want to be all gloom and doom next season as it also picked up renewals for three of its comedies. TV Line reports that New Girl , Raising Hope and The Mindy Project have all been renewed as well.
New Girl is the network’s highest grossing show and will be entering its third season. Raising Hope got a fourth season and the Mindy Project got a second season. Of all the shows renewed, the Mindy Project seemed the most unlikely as it has battled less than glowing reviews.
Will you follow The Following on Fox all the way through season 2?
