The Lone Ranger is not winning over too many critics.
Disney’s latest blockbuster, featuring Johnny Depp and Armie Hammer, has been shred apart by critics over the last few days. The movie officially opens in theaters today so we’ll see if moviegoers have a different opinion but things don”t look good for Tonto at the moment.
The movie currently has a 25% rating on Rotten Tomatoes and most of the critics are down right cruel .
Stephen Whitty writes at the Newark Star-Ledger : “I mean, no wonder Depp’s in disguise. No wonder Hammer wears a mask. Wouldn’t you?”
Disney had pretty high expectations for The Lone Ranger. The movie, which was made with a reported $250 million budget, employed the trio of Johnny Depp, director Gore Verbinski, and producer Jerry Bruckheimer. The last time those three got together they spawned the massively successful Pirates of the Caribbean franchise.
According to the critics, the group didn’t quite capture the excitement of Pirates with their latest movie.
Rene Rodriguez writes at The Miami Herald : “Director Gore Verbinski has adopted the more-is-better approach he used in the Pirates of the Caribbean series, crowding the movie with so many extraneous characters and subplots that the film becomes an endurance test.”
Here’s the trailer for The Lone Ranger. Do you think the new Depp movie will be a flop?
Here are some more terrible, terrible things that critics have said about The Lone Ranger.
The ScreenDaily writes: “An indigestible swill of forced humour and oversized, overbearing action sequences.”
Matt’s Movie Reviews writes: “The Lone Ranger may look the look and talk the talk, but it does not walk the walk. If it strutted into an old town saloon, be sure it’ll be thrown out onto a pile of cow dung.”
Hitfix adds: “Someone needs to drag this thing out behind the barn and put a silver bullet in its brain. It’s the only kindness this movie deserves.”
