The Boston Marathon bombing suspect is in custody and alive, police on streamed scanners are indicating.
At this point, little is known about the condition of the suspect, Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, but all major outlets now report that the 19-year-old is alive and in custody.
Ambulances have been requested to the scene, and it is not clear if or how badly the surviving Tsarnaev is wounded.
Just after 8:45 PM local time, Boston Police tweeted:
“Suspect in custody. Officers sweeping the area. Stand by for further info.”
Little is known about what occurred ahead of the capture of Tsarnaev, and some unconfirmed reports on Twitter suggest that the bombing suspect has “unspecified medical needs.”
The suspect was taken in alive after it is believed that he hid out all day on a boat in Watertown, and intermittent rapid gunfire was reported as police closed in on Tsarnaev early this evening.
Rebecca Krieger lives in the neighborhood in which the suspect was thought to be hiding, and she says :
“There were a bunch of shots less than a block away from me. They were very rapid, a bunch very quickly. Then a bunch of police cars — probably 40 — swarmed into the area … It’s very scary. There’s a lot going on. And it’s getting dark, too, which is adding to everything.”
Earlier today, Ruslan Tsarni, uncle of the suspects, told media and his surviving nephew Dzhokhar Tsarnaev:
“Turn yourself in … We’re ashamed. They’re children of my brother, who had little influence on them. He put a shame on our surname’s family … He put a shame on the entire Chechen ethnicity.”
Police in Boston tweeted after the capture:
CAPTURED!!! The hunt is over. The search is done. The terror is over. And justice has won. Suspect in custody.
