Mattel is putting the Barbie Malibu Dream House on the market. The company will discontinue the iconic toy after nearly five decades.
In an attempt to give the Barbie brand a facelift, Mattel has announced that it will no longer manufacture Barbie’s Malibu Dream House. According to Forbes , the company is creating a brand new dollhouse for its popular character to call home.
Mattel’s Lori Pantel explained:
“After 40 years living in Malibu, Barbie has got a lot of really great memories: she has had over 130 careers, she got back together with her boyfriend [Ken], she just finished her first season of a reality show. She felt there was no better time to sell the Dream House and see what else is out there.”
MSN reports the company has pulled out all the stops in its latest Barbie campaign. Since the character is putting her home on the market, Mattel listed the property on the real estate website Trulia. The asking price is a cool $25 million.
The listing reads:
“Designed as the ultimate bachelorette compound, it’s perfect for A-Listers, internet entrepreneurs, entertainment moguls and dolls of all ages who love to entertain yet want to relax and take in the never-ending ocean view.
“This innovatively scaled three-story home has more than 8,500 square feet of fab living space and a master bedroom featuring a balcony overlooking the ocean. This luxe property features clean lines, sparkly surfaces, dazzling details, and soaring ceilings that let the awesome Malibu sunsets into every pinktastic centimeter of the interior.”
To help Barbie find her new digs, Mattel has hired Million Dollar Listing: Los Angeles co-star Josh Altman to list the house. According to the New York Times , Mattel’s campaign will also include public relations, press releases on the official Barbie website, and engagement on social media. The company will unveil the new dollhouse this fall.
