A mother from Huntington Beach has accidentally sold her $18K earrings for just $20 in a garage sale. The earrings were located inside the pocket of an old jean jacket.
According to the 38-year-old woman, Dori Rhoades, she had hidden the earrings along with $1,500 and a ring that her husband had bought her in the jacket in case she was robbed.
Despite Rhoades anti-theft strategy, it was to be her downfall. According to her claims, she was so busy with other things going off in her life that it didn’t even cross her mind to look inside the jean jacket’s pockets to check for any hidden items:
“I volunteer in my kids’ classrooms multiple times a week, I work full time, I think anyone who is a mother knows. You give so much of yourself that sometimes your brain stops working. That morning, I sold the jean jacket without even a thought. For $20.”
This isn’t the first time that an expensive piece of jewelry has been miss-sold. Earlier this month, a woman had her $23K ring sold for $10 because her husband hadn’t realized it was in the box that he had taken to community garage sale. That story had a happy ending but so far this one has not.
Rhodes says of her failure to check the jacket:
“It’s my hope someone out there sees the story and knows the person who bought the jacket … I’ve just been beating myself up,”
I for one am definitely hoping that someone will see this story, and the others covering the $18K earrings, and then try to reunite Rhoades with her possessions. Hopefully this story won’t end up with us all finding out that the sold earrings have been auctioned off, just like a Bond watch which was also recently purchased from a garage sale.
