‘Battlefield 4’ Singleplayer To Take Cues From Multiplayer

Although Battlefield 3 was well received by critics and gamers alike, the game wasn’t exactly known for its singleplayer campaign; the core Battlefield series has always been about the multiplayer, and Battlefield 3 ‘s campaign came off as nothing more than a Call of Duty clone.

With Battlefield 4 , that may be changing.

Battlefield 3 ‘s singleplayer, much like its competition, was a fairly linear affair that guided players from one action set-piece to another, leaving players little room to experiment.

However, DICE general manager Karl-Magnus Troedsson, in speaking to Official PlayStation Magazine UK , claims that Battlefield 4 will be much more open-ended than its predecessor, putting it more in line with the franchise’s Bad Company spin-off series.

To offer something fresh with Battlefield 4 ‘s singleplayer campaign, Troedsson says that the development team at DICE are looking at multiplayer for ideas.

“There are signature multiplayer elements that we want to bring into single-player,” said Troedsson. “We want to give the player a choice. Do they want to go for the sneaky approach with a sniper rifle and a silenced pistol, or do they want to take a jeep and have the entire squad shoot at everything they see?”

To help bridge the gap between the singleplayer and multiplayer experiences in Battlefield 4 , Troedsson said that players will be allowed to issue commands to their AI-controlled squad mates, catering to those who prefer the tactical approach over going in guns blazing.

Additionally, Troedsson says that the maps will be quite a bit larger this time around; if you hated Battlefield 3 ‘s cramped corridors, then you can take some relief in knowing that DICE has heard your complaints.

Battlefield 4 is due out on PC, PlayStation 3, and Xbox 360 on October 29. The game will also be available on the PlayStation 4 and the Xbox One as a launch title.
