The “build a Death Star” petition on the White House website has crossed the 25,000-signature threshold, meaning that it now has enough support to warrant an official response from the Obama Administration.
“Those who sign here petition the United States government to secure funding and resources, and begin construction on a Death Star by 2016,” the petition reads .
“By focusing our defense resources into a space-superiority platform and weapon system such as a Death Star, the government can spur job creation in the fields of construction, engineering, space exploration, and more, and strengthen our national defense.”
According to Yahoo , the estimated cost of building an honest-to-goodness Death Star is roughly $852 quadrillion, about 13,000 times the gross domestic product of the entire Earth . Oh, and that’s after you factor in savings from not installing any guardrails whatsoever throughout the installation, which has led to a number of Stormtrooper accidental deaths and injuries.
Earlier today, we reported that Harry Belafonte , musician and liberal activist, praised the 2012 election as evidence that the American electorate is evolving in a more mature direction. I submit the Death Star petition to Mr. Belafonte as evidence to the contrary. Just like the online reaction to The Pope starting his own Twitter account, the people of the US aren’t becoming more concerned with social and economic issues as much as they are being consumed by a desire to self-entertain.
Still, it would be pretty sweet if we had a Death Star.
