Miley Cyrus is applauding the Disney Channel over the sitcom Good Luck Charlie after the show’s writers announced that they would be creating the network’s first same-sex couple.

The family sitcom will debut a character with two lesbian moms during the show’s fourth and final season next year.

A spokesperson for the Disney Channel revealed to TVGuide that the story line was in the pipe for some time and that the show’s creators wanted to make the depiction of Disney’s first same-sex couple as real and non-stereotypical as possible.

“This particular storyline was developed under the consultancy of child development experts and community advisors. Like all Disney Channel programming, it was developed to be relevant to kids and families around the world and to reflect themes of diversity and inclusiveness.”

The Disney Channel actually tested their reach in the gay community recently with its on-air social outreach campaign “Make Your Mark” in which a segment included a teen with two moms. It was a success, with GLAAD calling the outreach a “big step forward.”

Miley Cyrus, a Disney Channel graduate and self-proclaimed gay rights activist, has also praised the network for the decision on Twitter:

In case you can’t read the rest of that tweet, it continues: “so much of what kids think! Life isn’t bright sets & wardrobe & kids becoming superstars! This is INSPIRING.”

Actress Evan Rachel Wood , who is bisexual, also responded warmly to the news, tweeting:

What do you think of the Disney Channel’s decision to introduce their first same-sex couple on Good Luck Charlie ? Do you agree with Miley Cyrus that it’s “inspiring,” or do you have a different opinion? Sound off!
