Love Actually star Colin Firth says Harvey Weinstein’s behavior nauseated him, and he regrets that while he was benefitting from the work being done by The Weinstein Company, women were being sexually harassed. Firth says that he knows that Harvey Weinstein can be scary, and he can’t imagine what those women experienced. Though Colin Firth is best known for Love Actually , Firth was in two major films produced by Weinstein, Shakespeare In Love and The King’s Speech .
Like many actors who have worked with Harvey Weinstein, Love Actually star Colin Firth weighed in to show his support for the women Weinstein is said to have victimized.
“It’s with a feeling of nausea that I read what was going on while I was benefiting from Harvey Weinstein’s support. He was a powerful and frightening man to stand up to. It must have been terrifying for these women to step up and call him out. And horrifying to be subjected to that kind of harassment. I applaud their courage.”
Colin Firth says he commends those who have come forward and told their stories.
“By coming forward they’ve provided a jolting wake up throughout our industry. I hope it’s going to be a help to others, both in our own industry and elsewhere.”

But part of Colin Firth’s nausea might be due to a pinch of regret and shame because Firth had heard a story about Harvey Weinstein years ago from a co-star, Sophie Dix from the movie The Advocate (called The Hour of the Pig in the U.K.). Love Actually star Colin Firth says he wishes he had spoken out when Dix relayed her story of abuse at the hands of Weinstein.
Like many actors, Firth didn’t ask Sophie Dix additional questions when she told him that Harvey Weinstein harassed her, and he kept the information to himself for two decades.
“She told me she had had a distressing encounter with Harvey Weinstein, I don’t think she went into all the horrific detail I’ve read in her interview. But I remember her being profoundly upset by it. To my shame, I merely expressed sympathy… I didn’t act on what she told me.”
Sophie Dix claims that Harvey Weinstein assaulted her at a London hotel in 1990 when she was 22, pushing her on a bed and trying to take her clothes off. Luckily she got away. After Dix locked herself in a bathroom, she later opened it up to see Weinstein standing there masturbating. Dix says the event soured her on the industry and left her depressed.
“I decided if this what being an actress is like, I don’t want it.”
Sophie Dix says that Colin Firth shouldn’t be so hard on himself because she remembers him being supportive at the time.
“I am delighted Colin has spoken and I remember him being very supportive at the time.”

Colin Firth was one of the first men on Tuesday to step up in support for the growing pool of victims most telling their tales of being trapped in a hotel room with Harvey Weinstein. Firth said as a man he found Weinstein to be intimidating, and he can’t imagine what those women were thinking during their assault.
