After Donald Trump won the Republican nomination for the presidential election, many thought that he would be taking on Hillary Clinton . Her numbers and approval rating appeared to be too great for anyone to overcome, but that may no longer be the case. According to the most recent 2016 presidential polls, Bernie Sanders is not only gaining a lot of ground on Clinton in California, but he’s actually leading Trump in Michigan.
In California, Hillary Clinton is barely holding onto her lead and as of Wednesday night, it was down to just two points. According to the new Wall Street Journal / NBC News poll, Sanders is gaining quickly on Clinton with the state’s primary right around the corner on June 7.
Likely Democratic primary voters in California have given 49 percent of their support to Clinton, while Sanders has taken 47 percent. The Clinton campaign may be getting even more nervous as a wider electorate of all potential Democratic voters in the state of California shows Sanders ahead by one point.
The winner of the California primary would receive the 475 pledged delegates, and a tie would split them evenly right down the middle due to the Democrats’ proportional allocation system. Currently, Hillary Clinton leads Bernie Sanders by 270 pledged delegates, and in overall delegates by 770.
A victory in California would be iconic and great for Sanders, but a loss could be crippling to his campaign. As reported by NBC News , Sanders was on Meet The Press this past weekend and discussed the upcoming primary and how he thinks California could belong to him.
“Obviously, if we don’t do well in California, it will make our path much, much harder. No question about it. But I think we have a good chance to win in California, maybe win big, and maybe win four or five of the other states that [hold races] on June 7.”
In general elections, Sanders is showing a lot of strength in how things could be if he were to win the Democratic nomination. The Detroit News is reporting that some polls show both Sanders and Clinton leading Donald Trump in the state of Michigan, and Sanders is being seen as the more favorable of all three.
When polled voters were given a third option, the support for both Clinton and Trump went down drastically.
Putting Sanders up against Trump, it honestly seemed like it was not even a contest, even though Clinton is leading in the race for the Democratic nomination. In Michigan, early polls show that Sanders leads Trump by close to a whopping 19 points.
Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump both proved to be extremely unpopular in Michigan, while Sanders is still in their favor.
CNN is reporting that a tight race between Clinton and Trump is nothing new and not totally out of the question, as early polls have shown that for months. The issue here is the momentum that Bernie Sanders keeps gaining and how his support is constantly growing.
The Poll of Polls shows that one-in-eight registered voters aren’t giving their support to Clinton or Trump. If that would be the presidential race put before them, they may not end up voting at all. If they do choose to vote, their votes could be the deciding factor in who becomes the next president.
Right now, that’s not something that Hillary Clinton can give much concern, as she must still concentrate on defeating Bernie Sanders to become the Democratic nominee.
Bernie Sanders may be out of the race as far as a lot of people are concerned, but he’s not going to give it up without a fight. His momentum in California and his big numbers in general elections in Michigan are proof that he has a lot of supporters, and he’s only gaining more. The 2016 presidential polls are not always solid evidence of what the final outcome will be, but supporters of “Feel the Bern” have to be confident in what they’re seeing.
