Ever wanted to take a Rex down in ARK: Survival Evolved in a single shot or get close to doing that? The Woolly Rhino added in PC patch 238.0 and the upcoming 733.0 Xbox One update is capable of doing just that. Read on for a guide on how to tame the massive beast and what other uses it might hold.
Where to Find the Woolly Rhino
The Woolly Rhino is primarily found in the northwest section of The Island in the snowy Whitesky Peak. The Western Plains and Northern Plains also play home to the creature.
Woolly Rhinos are not aggressive by nature and will only attack if they are attacked. If you do choose to attack one, be aware of any other Rhinos that may be nearby as they may attack as well.
Taming
Woolly Rhinos are a knockout tame that will require you to keep your distance due to the damage they can do with their horns. The good news is their turning radius is pretty poor, so ARKSurvivors with decent speed should be able to move around a Rhino and shoot Tranq Arrows or Darts at the beast. Of course, the tried and tested technique of standing on a rock or a cliff works well along with shooting one while being carried by a bird or standing on a Quetzal platform.
The preferred taming food for the Woolly Rhino is Terror Bird Kibble (see taming guide ), followed by vegetables, Mejoberries, and berries in general. The Terror Bird Kibble recipe requires a Terror Bird egg, one Citronal, one Cooked Meat Jerky, two Mejoberries, three Fiber, and one Water. The good news is the Woolly Rhino’s Torpor drains somewhat slowly. Shooting a couple of dozen Tranq Arrows or Darts into a Rhino is required to bring it down, though. The exact amount depends on its level.
Refer to the taming calculators at Survive Ark , DodoDex , or Crumplecorn for the exact amount of food needed for the level of Terror Bird you are attempting to tame.
Note that the Woolly Rhino can only be picked up by a Quetzal. Only ARK: Survival Evolved PVP servers can pick up wild and tamed animals. PVE servers can only pick up tamed animals.
Usage
The Woolly Rhino is an extremely powerful creature in ARK: Survival Evolved. The creature can build up a charge attack that does up to 10 times the damage of a normal blow depending on the distance charged. This can bring down or severely injure larger animals in a single blow.
They serve as strong pack creatures as well. They have a high carry weight, which is always useful when moving items between bases. They are also capable of knocking over trees while charging and can even collect Thatch and Berries while doing so.
Killing and harvesting a Woolly Rhino will reward Raw Meat, Hide, Pelt, and Keratin. Another source of Pelt in ARK: Survival Evolved is always welcome. There’s also a chance to receive a Woolly Rhino Horn. This is one of the ingredients for the Broth of Enlightenment, which gives a 150 percent experience boost for 20 minutes.
Leveling
Those interested in using the Woolly Rhino for its offensive capabilities should focus on Melee Damage, Health, and Stamina as the three attributes to level up. If the Rhino is to be used as a pack animal, focus on Stamina, Weight, and Movement Speed.
Dossier
- Wild : Coelodonta utiliserro is a friendly herbivore, common to the tundra and grassland regions of the island. It is a large and dangerous creature, although it seems fairly trusting of the fauna around it. Once attacked, Coelodonta charges towards its foe. It builds up momentum as it charges, and depending on its ultimate impact speed, the results can be terrifying. With enough room to charge, it can even skewer the largest creatures in just one single gore!
- Domesticated : When not being hunted for its horns, Coelodonta makes an excellent beast of burden. Its ability to take on far larger opponents provided sufficient charging room, as well as its sizable load capacity, make it a solid addition to any trader party or gathering expedition.
- Known Information : Despite how powerful Coelodonta are, many tribes still hunt them extensively due to their unique resources. Its horns can be ground into a highly arousing powder, and its thick fur can support many insulating outfits, making the Coelodonta much in demand. Even less advanced tribes use packs to hunt them down, although at significant peril.
