Fear not, fanboys! Joss Whedon, the man responsible for bringing The Avengers to the big screen earlier this year, has been tapped to write and direct the sequel, according to Screen Crave. Although Whedon previously expressed hesitation and apprehension about returning to the franchise for another outing, the Buffy the Vampire Slayer mastermind’s participation in the follow-up was confirmed during the Walt Disney Investors Conference Call.
“It’s an enormous amount of work telling what is ultimately somebody else’s story, even though I feel like I did get to put myself into it,” Whedon explained. “But at the same time, I have a bunch of ideas, and they all seem really cool.”
If everything falls in place, meaning that Whedon and Marvel come to an agreement about the storyline and its characters, then moviegoers can expect to see the sequel in theaters sometime during 2015.
Contact Music reports that comic book movie aficionados will have plenty to keep them occupied before the next installment of The Avengers. Between now and 2015, fans will be able to feast their eyes upon Iron Man 3 , Thor: The Dark World , and Captain America: The Winter Soldier . There’s also a possibility that Scarlett Johansson’s Black Widow could get her own spin-off. What’s more, there’s also rumors of another Hulk movie in the works.
Joss Whedon’s The Avengers has become a worldwide box office sensation . In addition enjoying a $616 million haul in North America, the film has made $844 million in foreign markets. The worldwide gross: $1.4 billion. Do you know how many comic books that would buy? Since Whedon had great success with the previous entry, it only makes sense that Disney and Marvel would come knocking on the Toy Story scribe’s door when the time comes to craft the sequel.
The Avengers arrives on Blu-ray, DVD, and various other formats on September 25.
