Ariana Grande is being accused of plagiarizing her new track, “Be Alright.”
According to a new report from Breath Heavy , a number of fans have been pointing out the similarities between Grande’s new track “Be Alright” and a 2015 track released by Mura Masa and Nao, “Firefly,” which was released last year.
Several fans took to Twitter to point out the likeness of the two tracks – which can both be listened to below – with several calling out Grande and “Be Alright’s” producer for “ripping off” the 2015 track.
“Can’t believe the producer of Ariana Grande’s song ‘Be Alright’ copied (‘ripped off’) Mura Masa’s song ‘Firefly.’ Not cool!,” Twitter user @JonZarlengz wrote on March 23, while @LUCALUSH wrote, “Ariana grande’s team ripped mura masa – ‘firefly.’ Soundcloud has crossed over to the mainstream & the future of pop music is upon us.”
“Is it just me or does Ariana Grande’s ‘Be Alright’ sound veeeery similar to ‘Firefly’???? @mura_masa_ @thisNAO” social media user @lizzhxo also tweeted this week, as @meowielleb noted, “I’m living for ariana’s new song ‘be alright’ but the beginning sounds an awful lot like mura masa’s ‘firefly.’””
Breath Heavy is also reporting that Mura Masa also alluded to the similarities between the two songs in a number of now deleted tweets on social media earlier this week.
According to the site, the producer tweeted and promptly deleted a message that read “yeah I didn’t produce that Ariana Grande track” alongside a GIF of Kermit the Frog. Mura Masa also supposedly called Ariana’s song a “ripoff” in another deleted tweet.
But while Mura Masa is blasting Ariana Grande on social media over the song similarities, Grande’s fans have been taking to the 140-character site to defend the pop star over the plagiarism claims.
“@mura_masa_ Ariana made ‘Be Alright’ over a year ago, when did you make ‘Firefly?’” social media user @emilyxrose7 tweeted to the producer on March 25, adding, “You wish she copied you.”
Twitter user @DidJanoILuvLuke also defended Grande on the social media site, tweeting out, “I’m assuming people don’t know that Ariana pretty much finished recording & editing ‘Be Alright’ BEFORE Mura Masa’s ‘Firefly’ even came out??”
One fan even accused Mura Masa of claiming “Firefly” and Ariana’s latest track sound similar for publicity. “Mura Masa’s firefly sounds literally nothing like Ariana’s ‘Be Alright’ like wtf the things people will do to get fame smh,” @cool_potatoes_ wrote.
But this isn’t the first time Ariana Grande has been accused of plagiarism when it comes to her chart topping hits.
According to UnrealityTV , back in February 2015 Grande was blasted by Australian band SAFIA after they alleged that Ariana’s “One Last Time” music video was too similar to their music video for the 2014 single “You Are The One.”
The group took to Facebook to accuse Ariana and her team of plagiarizing their music video concept with a lengthy post that suggested those that worked on Grande’s “One Last Time” music video had “reworked the concept a little bit and then straight up stolen and copied some bits.”
“Wouldn’t be the first time uncreative talentless f**ks from big labels and/or big film firms steal ideas from small independent creatives who are trying really hard to make something different for a change,” the band continued on the social media site last year.
The band later backtracked on their remarks, writing on Facebook shortly after their initial message that there was “no way of ever proving whether Ariana’s video was influenced by ‘You Are The One’” and admitting that the two music video’s similarities may “genuinely may have just been a coincidence.”
Take a listen to both Ariana Grande’s “Be Alright” and Mura’s “Firefly” below.
