Marvel Cinematic Universe: ‘Agents Of SHIELD’ Recap — A Connection With ‘Daredevil’

Published on: March 16, 2016 at 9:56 AM

With the second season of Marvel’s Daredevil set to be unleashed via Netflix later this week, the clever people behind the Marvel Cinematic Universe must have thought it would be fun to remind viewers of the direct connection between the blind superhero from Hell’s Kitchen and the team secretly tasked with saving America from evil Inhumans. If you’ll recall, Matt Murdock’s dad had a big fight against Carl “Crusher” Creel. That is the same Creel who murdered several agents during S.H.I.E.L.D. ‘s second season premiere — and who made a return in last night’s episode.

When Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. returned last week, it was revealed that the SHIELD team would now be working in conjunction with former adversary Brigadier General Glenn Talbot to help keep the American people safe from ill-willed Inhumans. This week’s episode put that new relationship to the test, as S.H.I.E.L.D. is tasked with figuring out which world leader is helping Hydra’s Gideon Malick with a plan to round up the Inhuman population.

The following contains spoilers for the episode of Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. (Season 3, Episode 12, “Inside Man”) that aired March 15 on ABC.

S.H.I.E.L.D. is working for the POTUS

Under the orders of the president, SHIELD leader Phil Coulson and forced-ally Talbot are to represent the United States in a meeting with a handful of world leaders to address concerns about Inhumans. Someone is working as an inside man for Hydra (reporting to Malick) and is trying to obtain intel about the location of Inhumans.

As it turns out, Malick has kidnapped Talbot’s son, so Talbot was forced to cut a deal with Hydra and agreed to help them. Malick convinces the world leaders that Coulson is actually the leader of Hydra and wants to destroy all of the Inhumans. Once he has the information he needs, Malick tells his men to kill both Coulson and Talbot. They are saved at the last minute by Crusher Creel.

The return of Crusher Creel

At the beginning of Season 2 of Agents of SHIELD , Crusher Creel was responsible for the murder of multiple SHIELD agents. As the team finds out, Creel now works for Talbot as something of a right-hand man.

Creel is the only human ever to come in direct contact with the terrigen obelisk and live. After Fitz and Simmons do some blood work, they discover that his DNA contains the vaccine for Terrigenesis (the process that activates the dormant Inhuman genes in those who have it). While it can’t reverse the effects Terrigenesis has had on those who have already become Inhuman, it could prevent the transformation from happening in others.

Daisy and Lincoln disagree

The potential “vaccine” presents a philosophical difference between Daisy and Lincoln. Daisy feels as though Terrigenesis helped her realize her purpose in life and thinks developing a vaccine would mean the government could simply wipe out the Inhuman race. Lincoln spent a considerable amount of time studying such things and believes a vaccine should be made available for those who don’t want to undergo the change.

Lincoln had a bit of an attitude while working with Melinda May and had to be told repeatedly to stop using his powers on Creel. While these things seem to indicate that Lincoln may not be all that happy, his make-out session with Daisy would indicate that he’ll remain faithful to S.H.I.E.L.D. — for now.

The evolution of the enemy

While Malick continues to worry about what appears to be a very feeble host body (Grant Ward) for the Inhuman that will eventually be the Hive, his concern is unnecessary. Malick leaves Mr. Giyera and Lucio to watch after him, but the Hive has other plans.

He tells his caretakers that he needs five humans. When the five “innocents” are brought to him, he devours/consumes them (viewers do not get to watch) and his body (while very messy and covered in ooze) is clearly much stronger. It looks like the Hive will be unleashed very soon.

In the end…

At the meeting, Russian delegate Anton Petrov made it clear that his country is willing to provide a safe haven for Inhumans, a place where they can form a community of their own without feeling judged. While some of the other delegates see it as a move in the weapons race to have all of the Inhumans on the side of Russia, Malick sees the potential Russian community as an easy way to find more Inhumans for the army he wants to build.

Unaware that Coulson and Talbot have not been executed, Malick is also unaware that SHIELD Agents Lance Hunter and Bobbi Morse are stowed away on the plane carrying the secret Hydra leader and the Russian delegate. But viewers won’t learn how that plane ride ends until next week.
