Donald Trump has been viewed as a front-runner to win the Republican presidential nomination for the past few months. His name has continued growing among the American people and he is fresh off of primary wins in New Hampshire and South Carolina.
It has been a very heated race over the past few weeks, with Ted Cruz and Donald Trump going back and forth with each other in the media.
During a pep rally on Monday night ahead of the Nevada caucuses, Trump took aim at Cruz in particular. He has had many words for Cruz since the Iowa caucuses and the two have been sparring ever since. Trump went even farther this time around in his criticism of Cruz.
“ This guy is sick . There’s something wrong with this guy,” Trump said.
In addition to throwing insults at Cruz, Trump also lashed out at a protester. He said that he would like to “punch him in the face” after a man disrupted his rally and was escorted out with a smile on his face.
“ I’d like to punch him in the face . He’s smiling, having a good time.”
Looking back at the fights between the two Republicans, Cruz has actually done a lot of his own attacking of Trump. His campaign has run multiple negative ads, calling out Trump’s track record on many different issues. Attacking has been a major theme within the party in the race thus far, which has been a concern of many voters.
At this point in time, Trump and Cruz are viewed as the top competition for each other to reach the White House. Marco Rubio has slowly been pushing back into the race, as well. It is still a three candidate race, but Trump and Cruz seem to believe they are primary competitors with the way they have been attacking each other.
Cruz was able to win the Iowa caucuses ahead of Trump, but came up short in New Hampshire with Trump winning in blowout fashion and finished third in the South Carolina primary behind Trump and Rubio.
It will be very intriguing to see what happens in the Republican presidential race coming down the stretch. Trump is a very good bet to end up winning the nomination, but there are plenty of ways to see either Cruz or Rubio sneaking past him as well.
Just last month, Cruz began his attacks on Trump and called him a typical New Yorker with ties to the Democratic party.
There is absolutely no love between Trump and Cruz, and it is showing more and more each time they mention each other to the media. Even the debates have been full of bickering and fighting. Trump has been known to enjoy talking negatively about other candidates, but Cruz responding wasn’t a thing until recently.
The stage has been set for the remainder of the Republican presidential race. Big name candidates like Jeb Bush, Chris Christie, Rand Paul, and others have already bowed out. John Kasich and Ben Carson are still involved in the race, but are falling away quickly.
Trump and Cruz will have to find ways to combat each other in the coming weeks to win the nomination. Perhaps Rubio will end up being the winner, with Trump and Cruz so focused on tearing down each other. Rubio has been able to focus solely on his campaign and making a run at catching both candidates in the polls.
Even though some may not believe that attacking other candidates is the mature thing to do, it seems to be working for Trump. Unless something changes in the near future, the Republican party could end up choosing Trump to be their candidate in the 2016 election.
While Trump may seem to have a big lead right now, there is still a lot of time before a decision has to be made. Other candidates will continue attacking Trump and will hope for him to slip up and say the wrong things. Trump hasn’t done so yet, but the race is not over yet.
Do you think Donald Trump is the right candidate for the Republican party? Is Trump right about Cruz?
