Considering their amazing chemistry on Outlander , many fans have suspected that something may be going on off screen between Sam Heughan and Caitriona Balfe. However, in a recent interview with E! Online , Heughan and Balfe attempted to put to rest rumors of a romance, and partially succeeded.
“We’re not together,” Balfe stated in the interview. “It’s funny. We’ve always said from the get-go that we’re incredibly great friends. And to have that friendship and that closeness and to be able to get along as we do on set, it’s great that we’re able to get along that well. We’re not together. I’m sorry to break people’s hearts.”
While Heughan admitted that they could “try” and date each other, he added that many fans want to see Jamie and Claire’s relationship replicated in real life. When that doesn’t happen, fans are left disappointed and feel as though their on-screen romance is a sham.
“No, I think it’s strange, isn’t it?” Heughan stated. “Because I think people buy into the show and us saying it’s not real, they feel like they’ve been duped. It’s like, ‘You acted it. You lied to us!’ And I’m like, ‘Well, sorry!’”
While the two Outlander stars made it clear that they aren’t seeing each other at the moment, they did not rule out a future romance once the series is over. In fact, as Balfe pointed out, the main obstacle in them getting together involves their work on Outlander . Does this mean the two might get together in the future?
Meanwhile, apart from their real life romance, Balfe and Heughan are gearing up for the second season of Outlander . Along with Jamie and Claire traveling to Paris, France, and stopping the Jacobite Rebellion, both characters will be dealing a number of new challenges in the upcoming season.
In an interview with Variety , Sam Heughan discussed some of the challenges both Jamie and Claire will face in the new season. For starters, the actor revealed that Jamie is still dealing with the terrible events he lived through in Season 1. Luckily, Jamie has Claire to help him work through his past demons.
“Season 2 has been about discovering a side of the character I didn’t know was there,” Heughan explained. “He’s playing someone else — he’s learning to be quite deceptive, and he does it very well.”
With the characters moving to a different country this time around, Heughan went on to reveal that Jamie and Claire will face plenty of danger in the new season, only this time it won’t be physical. Paris may be a far cry from the highlands in Scotland, but that doesn’t mean the two time travelers won’t find themselves in a few difficult situations.
“The danger in Paris and Versailles is less physical with swords and weaponry; it’s more politics and backstabbing and poison. It’s more hidden. There’s a lot more politics at work and a lot more danger,” Heughan shared. “Then we go back to Scotland, where we go back to the blood and mud and gore.”
The new season of Outlander is based on the second book in the bestselling series by Diana Gabaldon.
At the same time, the second season will also feature the return of Frank Randall (Tobias Menzies) and the introduction of Claire’s daughter, Brianna. At this time, it isn’t known how close the series will stick to the books in regard to these characters. Still, their appearance is sure to get any fan excited for the release of the new season.
The second season of Outlander is set to air in April on Starz.
