The 2012 Tony Awards took place at the Beacon Theatre in New York on Sunday, where musical Once was the big winner with eight Tonys.
Once , the stage adaptation of the 2006 film of the same name, scooped eight gongs, including those for Best Musical Direction, Best Lead Actor in a Musical and the top award for Best Musical overall. Clybourne Park took home the coveted award for Best Play.
Elsewhere at this year’s awards, now in their 66th year, Peter and the Starcatcher managed five Tonys (including Christian Borle’s win for Best Performance by an Actor in a Featured Role), and there was a special award for Hugh Jackman.
Oh, and there was something of a shock in the Best Performance by an Actor category, with red-hot favorite Philip Seymour Hoffman losing out to Brit James Corden, who then gave an emotional speech paying tribute to Seymour Hoffman, who he described as his “favorite actor in the world.”
Meanwhile, a packed Beacon Theatre was kept entertained by musical interludes from, amongst others, Evita , Newsies , and Once , while host Neil Patrick Harris proved an affable overseer.
