As all modern movie fans know, Hollywood loves to reboot and remake anything and everything that was dear to our hearts in the ’80s and ’90s. To this day, it’s very fortunate that the Back to the Future franchise has remained untouched for this long. However, Christopher Lloyd will have the internet buzzing with news that he is open to a Back to the Future sequel, as long as the old crew are involved.
Speaking to the Hollywood Reporter , Lloyd said he would love one more Back to the Future outing.
“I would love to do Doc again, no question. It’s tough to come up with an idea that contains the excitement of the original three. So it would be a real challenge for the writers to come up with an original Back To The Future story that has the same passion and intensity and excitement as the other three. But it could be done, you never know.”
The news comes on a resurgence of popularity for the franchise, with October 21 fast approaching. The date, which has earned the name “Back to the Future Day,” marks the exact date in Back to the Future: Part II when Marty McFly travels to the future in 1985. Cultural folklore was introduced to the idea of hover boards and Pepsi Perfect, an idea that came to fruition earlier this month when Pepsi created actual bottles of the soda to cash in on the day. CNET had the first taste test of the drink, which tastes just like regular real-sugar Pepsi, but it shows just how influential the franchise has been on the fans.
Despite the popularity, a fourth instalment in the Back to the Future franchise is unlikely, with Lloyd turning 77 next week and Michael J. Fox’s documented health issues. However, Lloyd is confident that Fox would return one more time.
“I think regardless of the Parkinson’s, [Michael J. Fox] would probably jump on the role and he’d be great. I can’t see doing another sequel without him. I would certainly want Bob Zemeckis directing it, Bob Gale writing it and the other principals being involved. And, of course, there has got to be a DeLorean. It was such a perfect choice for the film. It looked so speedy and futuristic.”
Lloyd is aware of the major hurdles in developing a fourth movie. He believes that recasting Marty McFly would be a bad decision, one that many fans would wholeheartedly agree with.
“It’s hard to replace Marty. Michael J. Fox was so wonderful in the role. He’s just so great to see. He’s just so warm and smart and has such courage coping with the Parkinson’s. He’s indomitable. He’s just great to be around.”
Lloyd and Fox share a close friendship off-screen, one that provided an emotional core to the original trilogy. Lloyd is glad that the films brought so much happiness and joy to the fans for such a long period, and he never saw the immense popularity coming. To this day, he still attends conventions worldwide to celebrate the films success.
Real-life can often imitate art as well. As Tech Times reported some time ago, many technological predictions made in Back to the Future: Part II now exist — smart watches, robotic gas pumps, smart homes, virtual windows, and giant flatscreen TVs, not to mention an actual hover board that sells for a cool $10,000 — but the unpredictable run of the Chicago Cubs making their way toward the World Series is something no one could have predicted. The timing is uncanny as the team move on to the National League Championship Series on Tuesday, something that could render events in Back to the Future: Part II all too true.
Asked if he would throw out the first pitch should Chicago make it to the World Series, Lloyd simply stated.
“Maybe it’ll happen. We’ll see. They got to get there first.”
So, Back to the Future may yet get a third sequel, something that will divide the dedicated fans. In the meantime, you can get an idea of what it may look like in the Toyota commercial below, one that reunites Fox and Lloyd in 2015. They discuss the wonder of technology over coffee. Enjoy.
