Although she wasn’t necessarily searching for a new relationship when she found herself time traveling back to 18th century Scotland, Claire Randall ( Caitriona Balfe ) certainly connected with Jamie Fraser ( Sam Heughan ) right from the start. With their romance being a major storyline in the Outlander series, Balfe, along with executive producer Ronald D. Moore and author Diana Gabaldon, recently discussed the couple’s relationship in an interview with People .

“When Claire first meets Jamie, the initial bond of patient and nurse is something that she can relate to,” Balfe stated.

At the same time, Moore explained how Claire and Jamie feel an immediate connection, despite Claire not looking to be with someone new.

“She’s not here to have any kind of relationship with anybody, much less this young man. But nonetheless, there is a spark between the two of them,” Moore said.

What was that spark that helped the two come together? According to Gabaldon, Claire feels as though she has an important place beside Jamie, which isn’t something she felt was true with her oother husband, Frank Randall.

“Claire feels somewhat more equality with Jamie, she’s always felt slightly as though she was Frank’s wife, so to speak, and she really has no role in life except as Mrs. Randall,” Gabaldon stated in the interview. “Whereas with Jamie, in the 18th century, once they come together she is Jamie’s wife, but she is still very much the healer, the conjurer woman. She has her own destiny and she can fulfill it with Jamie.”

From Balfe’s point of view, another aspect of her character’s love for Jamie includes some attributes that make him relatable to her own time period.

“Even though he is a man of that time there is something timeless about him,” Balfe explained. “And there’s something quite modern about his willingness to kind of change his viewpoint, or learn, or be open to new ideas.”

All of these things are sure to be tested as Jamie and Claire find themselves traveling to Paris, France, in Season 2. With both characters set to involve themselves deep inside the political scene of Paris, there are doubtless challenges ahead for their relationship. Luckily, with their bond being so strong, there is little doubt they’ll be able to make it through whatever is ahead.

Meanwhile, if fans can’t get enough of the interactions between Claire and Jamie, the recently released DVD version of Season 1 contains some deleted scenes from the first season. According to E! Online , there is a total of 12 additional minutes of Season 1, which should help fans feed their Outlander addiction as they wait for Season 2 to air.

One of the deleted scenes includes footage of Claire and Jamie in Castle Leoch following their wedding. Although they thought the castle had been deserted, the video reveals an unexpected surprise was waiting for them as they explored the castle grounds.

In addition to the added scenes, the DVD also includes a number of hilarious bloopers. Although one might suspect a show concerning time travel and love would be fairly serious, the videos reveal that the cast was often quite giddy when the cameras were rolling. In fact, the bloopers feature enough accidental falls, trips, and laughing to keep anyone amused.

The DVD Collector’s Edition of the first season of Outlander was released on September 29. Along with the added scenes and bloopers, this edition includes an interview with Gabaldon, making it one DVD most Outlander fans won’t want to miss out on.

The second season of Outlander is expected to premiere sometime in the spring of 2016.
