The “Earthquake” reported earlier by the United States Geological Survey, CNN and other news wires around the world, has been confirmed by the North Korean government to be a nuclear test.
“We have successfully conducted another nuclear test as part of the republic’s measures to strengthen its nuclear deterrent.”
At 9.55 a.m. local time, a seismic event occurred about 45 miles from the town of Kimchaek, North Korea. It had a preliminary magnitude of 4.7 and a depth of approx. 6.2 miles. The epicenter of the event was determined to be approx. 5 miles West of the location where North Korea conducted a similar underground nuclear test on October 9, 2006.
The locations above are still preliminary and subject to change as more complete analysis of data is conducted.
South Korea is calling an emergency meeting to discuss the North Korean nuclear test.
