Justin Bieber’s mega-hit “What Do You Mean?” has set yet another record, becoming the fastest song to reach 100 million streams on Spotify. It achieved the feat in just 25 days (August 28-September 21).
In so doing, the Canadian superstar dethrones the 46 days record previously set by Wiz Khalifa’s “See You Again” featuring Charlie Puth , from the Fast and the Furious 7 soundtrack earlier this year.
Hot on Wiz and Puth’s heels, Rihanna’s “FourFiveSeconds” featuring Kanye West and Sir Paul McCartney, took 53 days to punch in 100 millions streams on Spotify . Behind that, Ellie Goulding’s “Love Me Like You Do” took 59-60 days to do the same. The Weekend’s “Can’t Feel My Face” took between 65-67 days, while Calvin Harris Feat. John Newman on “Blame” got there in 70 days, and Mark Ronson “Uptown Funk” Feat. Bruno Mars did it in 80 days.
“What Do You Mean?” is the lead single from Bieber’s upcoming fourth studio album, which rolls out on November 13, when it will face off with One Direction’s Made in the A.M.
Spotify updated figures for “Mean” to reflect 103,554,980 streams on September 22.
The single was released on August 28 along with a lyric video. After quickly taking over the top spots on iTunes within a record-breaking five minutes, it went on to top 90 iTunes charts. Two days later, the Biebs performed it live at the MTV VMAs, after which he broke down and cried on stage. Numerous No. 1’s on national charts followed in Australia , Ireland, the U.K. , New Zealand, and more .
Online chatter reveals Justin Bieber fans kicked off their collective attempt to set a brand new 100 million streams record with “Mean” on the day it dropped. Fast forward to September 8, Bieber made history as the youngest male artist to debut atop Billboard’s Hot 100 chart . “Mean” became the 23rd song to do so, launching with 337,000 paid downloads.
The track went on to set a new Spotify record for highest streams in its debut-week, racking up over 21 millions streams in the first five days after its release. The tropical house-pop jam also set a new record with the highest first-week streams for a U.K. single, with 3.2 million plays across recognized streaming services such as Spotify, Deezer, and Apple Music in the week ending September 4.
