Floyd Mayweather Says He Has Nothing Left To Accomplish, Retirement Around The Corner

Floyd Mayweather is beyond a shadow of a doubt one of the best boxers to ever lace up the gloves. For anyone who doubts that statement, just ask Floyd Mayweather what he thinks about his career. The boxing superstar may have a couple of more fights in him, but recently he’s started talking about life after the sport. Specifically, Mayweather is talking about the fact that he might retire soon, and Floyd says one of the reasons to do this is because he doesn’t have anything left to accomplish in the sport.

MLive reports that Mayweather is calling his fight against Andre Berto his career finale. Floyd will defend his welterweight title, and should he win (and he should win), he will apparently finish his career with a sparkling 49-0 record. It’s hard to argue that anyone who has fought in 49 bouts and won all of them needs to fight in a 50th, but it would be a nice round number. At 38-years-old, Floyd Mayweather has made it pretty clear that at this point in his life, he’s thinking more about his long-term health, then getting to some arbitrary mark on his boxing record.

CBS Sports had a quote from Mayweather that shows just how much Floyd has been thinking about the long term effects of his chosen career.

“My health is more important. Anything can happen. I’m not worried about losing, but I want to have a sharp mind. You can make a lot of money, but you still want to be able to talk, walk and have a sharp mind.”

While it has been pointed out to Floyd that if he were to win a bout after the Berto fight, it would allow him to surpass the legendary Rocky Marciano. Even this fact doesn’t seem to be moving Mayweather to change his approach to retirement. Despite the fact that he’s looking at the end of his career, Floyd knows that he needs to focus on the man who will be facing off against him on September 12. Mayweather thinks the fact that he’s heavily favored in the match only helps his opponent.

“He’s got nothing to lose, and when you’ve got a guy that’s put in a situation with nothing to lose, it makes him work that much harder,” the superstar said. “He’s got a chance to be one of the top guys in the sport when I’m through. So does he want to dethrone Floyd Mayweather? Absolutely.”
